Large Mammal
Cougar
A legend with many names
Where Cougars Live
Not currently found in Maine, but thriving across much of the west – from Canada to Mexico – with a small, separate population in Florida.
In the Wild
Cougars once roamed Maine but were gone by the late 1800s. The last confirmed cougar in the state was killed in 1938 near the Canadian border. Today, occasional sightings are reported, but none confirmed. Wildlife biologists carefully investigate reports when physical evidence is available. Habitat loss and busy roadways make it difficult for cougars to return to former ranges.
Aliases include: mountain lion, puma, panther, and catamount.
