Small Mammal
Fisher
A misunderstood little critter
Meet the Fisher
Fishers live statewide in Maine and are true habitat generalists, moving comfortably through a wide range of forested landscapes.
Fisher Facts
Members of the weasel family, fishers are agile hunters and one of the few predators that can successfully take on porcupines. They’re shy by nature, prefer wild foods away from people, and, despite tall tales, there’s little evidence they pose a notable risk to domestic cats.
Quick Facts
Average Size
Weighing in at just 8–12 pounds, fishers pack a lot of confidence into a long, low-slung body.
What's on the Menu
Small mammals, rabbits, birds, animal carcasses (carrion), plus nuts and fruit when they’re in season. And despite the name, fish aren’t usually on the menu.
The Look
Fishers have long bodies, short legs, rounded ears, dark brown fur, and a bushy tail built for balance and agility.
