Health Education & Physical Education Hub

Learning

Welcome to the Maine Department of Education Health Education and Physical Education Learning Hub, a centralized location designed to support Maine educators, school leaders, and communities in fostering a whole-child approach to well-being.

Prioritizing student health and physical activity optimizes learning. Research consistently shows that active, healthy students possess a significantly higher capacity to thrive in school and for academic focus, emotional resilience, and lifelong success. This hub serves as a primary source for supporting the development and implementation of standards-aligned curricula, providing instructional tools, and professional learning resources specifically for Maine school communities.

By equipping educators with comprehensive health literacy frameworks and progressive physical education strategies, we ensure that every Maine student has an equitable opportunity to develop critical skills for healthy, active living.

Health Education and Physical Education boosts cognitive performance as regular physical activity alters brain physiology, directly improving classroom focus, memory retrieval, and overall test scores. Skills-based health education fosters mental and emotional resilience and equips students with vital coping mechanisms to manage stress, anxiety, and peer pressures. Academic barriers are reduced by offering proactive health and physical literacy which cuts down on chronic absenteeism by teaching preventative self-care and long-term wellness habits. A structured curriculum guarantees that all Maine students, regardless of background or geographic location, gain the foundation required for a healthy life.
