2027 MaineCare Eligibility Changes: Information, Resources, and Partner Briefing
The federal government is making changes to MaineCare (Maine’s Medicaid program). These changes apply to Medicaid programs across the country. Last week the Office of MaineCare Services (OMS) sent out a Save-the-Date for an August 24, 2026, partner and provider briefing on upcoming changes to MaineCare eligibility. There is still time to register!
The Office for Family Independence (OFI) and OMS are working together to implement these changes as smoothly as possible to avoid disruptions in coverage for eligible Mainers. Our goal is to provide Mainers with clear, accurate, and actionable information so they can confidently understand how these changes may affect them.
What is changing?
As of January 1, 2027, the following MaineCare eligibility changes will start:
For MaineCare Expansion adults:
-
New Work Requirements; and
-
Eligibility renewals every 6 months instead of every 12 months.
For all MaineCare members:
-
Reductions in retroactive coverage.
MaineCare Expansion members are adults between 19 and 64 years old who have MaineCare based on their income. They do not meet the Social Security disability guidelines or have Medicare.
What can MaineCare Members Do Now?
The most important things MaineCare members can do right now are:
-
Keep their contact information up to date with OFI,
-
Read any letters they receive,
-
Continue renewing their coverage as required, and
-
Continue using their MaineCare benefits.
We know that members rely on their healthcare providers for trusted information about MaineCare. We appreciate the value that adds, as well as the additional work. Our goal is to support providers through these changes
