Striped Skunk

More than meets the nose

Home is Where You Make It

Striped skunks live statewide in Maine, especially in suburban neighborhoods, open woodlands, and agricultural fields.

Skunk Smarts

Skunks provide valuable backyard services by keeping insect and rodent populations in check. Their warning system is layered: stripes first, tail raised second, foot-stomping last – and only then comes the spray. Few predators take the risk, though great horned owls are one of the exceptions.

Quick Facts

Average Size

Skunks weigh between 3-14 pounds and measure 17-30 inches long.

What's on the Menu

Skunk diets consist of insects, rodents, berries, bird eggs, nuts, corn, and more. They do a lot of behind-the-scenes cleanup.

The Look

Skunks sport glossy black fur with two bold white stripes down the back and a bushy tail – nature’s clearest “do not approach” sign.
