Where They Wander
Blanding's turtles are found only in southern Maine, in vernal pools, marshes, shrub swamps, streams, and ponds with dense vegetation and good basking spots. They're highly mobile and have been tracked moving over a mile between wetlands – which makes roads a serious hazard.

Blanding's turtles are endangered and one of our rarest reptiles. If you spot one, please report it to MDIFW. Every sighting helps build a clearer picture of where these turtles still survive.

These State-Endangered species measure about 7–9 inches long.
What's on the Menu
Their smooth, helmet-shaped carapace is brownish-black to black with abundant cream or tan flecks and streaks.
The Look
Omnivorous who eat plants, berries, fish, larval amphibians, insects, mollusks, slugs, and earthworms. They also make annual trips to vernal pools specifically to feed on breeding amphibians.
