Bald Eagle
Iconic, powerful, back from the brink
Hi, Marilyn!
Marilyn has been a beloved member of our park family since 2005, when she was found injured in the wild and brought to Avian Haven, a wildlife rehabilitation center in Freedom, ME. Because part of her right wing had to be amputated, Marilyn couldn't be released back into the wild. So she made her home with us, and we couldn't be happier. Listen closely near feeding time and you may hear. She loves to talk to her keepers.
Where Eagles Soar
Bald eagles live statewide in Maine year-round, especially near lakes, ponds, rivers, and along the coast where fish are plentiful.
A Conservation Success Story
In 1976, just one year after the Maine Endangered Species Act passed, only 31 nesting pairs remained statewide. Thanks to decades of conservation work, Maine is now home to more than 800 nesting pairs. Siri, play The National Anthem, full volume!
Bald eagles build enormous nests – often 5-6 feet wide and several feet deep – that may be reused year after year.
Quick Facts
Average Size
Measuring 2½–3 feet long with an impressive 6–7½ foot wingspan, bald eagles are about the same size as golden eagles—and hard to miss.
What's on the Menu
Fish are the main course, but bald eagles will also take small mammals or waterfowl.
The Look
A massive dark brown body topped with a bright white head and tail. Juveniles sport mottled brown plumage until their iconic white feathers appear around age four or five. In flight, look for broad wings held flat.
